What to expect

Most chemotherapy is given through the vein at the chemotherapy unit. On the day of the chemotherapy appointment, a patient should arrive at the chemotherapy unit early in the morning and register. Laboratory blood tests will be done (sometimes these blood tests are done in the morning of the day before chemotherapy). If the results of the blood tests suggest the patient’s clinical condition is satisfactory to receive chemotherapy, he/she will receive chemotherapy that morning. Chemotherapy usually will be completed by late morning to early afternoon.

Sometimes a patient has to take dexamethasone (a steroid) before chemotherapy. Please remember to do so as directed and remember to take the morning dose before coming to the chemotherapy unit.
